Cyber Security and Computer Science: Career Opportunities and Technology’s Impact on all

Central High School’s Social Studies 2.0 – Life Skills class visited the beautiful campus of Roger Williams University

in Bristol, Rhode Island to

meet with professors, students, and facility maintenance personnel for conversations about careers
the students were curious about.
Furthermore,

the conversations also explored

technology’s impact on careers and jobs.

Shakour Abuzneid, Ph.D, ‘futurist‘ and professor of Cybersecurity & Networking, presents career information on the growing industry of CYBERSECURITY.   Professor Abuzneid also shared his vision of technology’s impact on different jobs and careers in the near and distant future.

Michael Walsh, Director for Student Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging  spoke about his roles as advocate for students throughout their enrollment at RWU.  Mr Walsh also spoke about a number of keys to success for meeting the challenges of higher education and taking advantage of the many opportunities a college education offered students, especially, TIME MANAGEMENT and NETWORKING.  Both topics are introduced and developed in the Social Studies 2.0 – Life Skills syllabus.

Roger Williams University students share  shared their personal stories coming from ‘diverse’ education communities to the mostly white community of RWU during a networking  luncheon in the RWU cafeteria.  The RWU student panel spoke about using LINKEDIN to build, nurture and expand their NETWORK of successful, influential, ethical people to call upon in their quest for success.   The Central High School Social Studies 2.0 – Life Skills program students acknowledged having LINKEDIN profiles.

Jacob Allen, Admission Counselor at RWU, welcomed the Central High students to the university.   Mr Allen then set up meetings in different departments of the university which students had expressed interest in from Business and Engineering to a  meeting about Electrician careers at the university with one the University’s facilities Directory.

Jacob Henderson, Central High School junior, has a meeting with Bill McCarthy, Director for Mechanical & Electrical Systems at RWU.   Mr McCarthy shared his career story and a few preliminary steps to be taken to become a licensed Electrician.

Central High School student, Junior Brownell, meets with Greg Geneus – Roger Williams University Energy Management Controls Technician to discuss career choices and the importance of Lifetime learning during one of the breakout sessions following Dr. Shakour Abuzneid’s  presentation.   Greg is currently enrolled in a master’s degree program at RWU.

Central High School junior, Julio Cartegena, NETWORKS with RWU’s Admission Officer, Jacob Allen, by exchanging BUSINESS CARDS following Mr Allen’s opening presentation.

The field trip concluded with a stop at America’s BEST ICE CREAM STORE, THE ICE CREAM BARN in Swansea, Massachusetts.
