An Introduction to a Nurse Practitioner Career

An Introduction to a Nurse Practitioner Career

Central High School Junior Katherine Solomon welcomes Nurse Practitioner Liz Welch from Brown University Medical Associates to Central High School and her Social Studies 2.0 – Life Skills class outside the classroom before the start of class.  Katherine was chosen to be the class HOST after expressing an interest in Nursing and wanting to build a NETWORK of successful, influential, and honest nurses.

Katherine offers Liz Welch her business card while Liz reciprocates with her Brown Medical Associates business card.

Katherine Solomon introduces Liz Welch, Nurse Practioner – Adult Reconstruction at Brown University Medical Associates, to Katherine’s classmates to open the day’s class.

Following Katherine’s introduction, each student approaches Liz to welcome her to Central High School and their Life Skills class. Emmanuel Destiny also offers his business card to her while Liz offers her business card to Emmanuel.  Emmanuel has expressed an interest in nursing and, like Katherine, seeks to build a NETWORK of successful, influential, honest people in the medical profession.

Liz describes her typical daily activities as a Nurse Practitioner to the students.   Nashla Alcantara, sitting in the second row, listens intently as Liz responds to her question on the importance of good “soft skills” like empathy, listening and observation, and perseverance.

Cayden Curry asks Liz about the impact of emerging technologies like Artificial intelligence and Robotics on nursing responsibilities.  Liz’s response – “robots are here, in the nursing industry, and they’ll be more coming.”

Angie Ozuna, sitting next to Katherine, listens to Liz’s response on the critical importance of TIME MANAGEMENT skills to be successful. “Not only is TIME MANAGEMENT IMPORTANT, you must also be able to prioritize the things you have to do each day and week.   The responsibilities and tasks that help you achieve the goals you’ve set to be the successful person you hope to be must get done each day and week and great TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS are the only way to get them done!”

Liz concluded the day by sharing her email address with the students and encouraged them to connect with her for questions about nursing.
