Today’s Class: March 10, 2017

Today’s guest was Neil Amper, Vice-President at Capstone Properties,

a commercial real estate company.   Commercial real estate companies buy, sell and lease (rent) factory buildings, apartment complexes, and other company buildings.

There was no class host today.  Rather, there was a test

to start the class.  Neil arrived early to Hope High School and went directly to our Life Skills classroom.  After Neil chose a desk to sit, I simply observed how Life Skills students would react to a guest already seated in the classroom.  The result of today’s test was impressive.  Almost every student, upon entering the classroom, approached Neil, extended a handshake and a “welcome to Hope High School”.

When Ingris Izaguirre Maradiaga (back to the camera) entered the classroom and saw today’s guest, Neil Amper, sitting in one of the classroom chairs, she immediately approached Neil to welcome him to Hope Life Skills. By looking at Neil’s face, one can easily determine Ingris’ welcome was effective. Good job, Ingris! You represented us well today.

Neil’s story was both astonishing and inspirational.

I grew up in a very privileged family.

My father started what eventually became a $500,000,000 (million) scrap metal company in Pennsylvania.  We lived in a huge house with live-in servants.  My father owned his own plane.  We never wanted for anything.  After I graduated from college, I managed one of my father’s facilities in Rhode Island.  I was making a lot of money.

At the age of 28, I was worth $10,000,000 (million).

Today’s homework: March 3rd, 2017

1.  Write your job resume.  Don’t worry about how good it is.  When I lost my job last year, I had to write a resume.  I sent it to Nan for her review.  It took three or four attempts before I created a resume that Nan believed properly presented my skills, talents and experience that would illustrate the value I could bring to a new company.   Writing a good resume is a process;  it takes time.  And, it’s worth the effort.  You will all eventually need a resume to present when you apply for an internship, job, after school organization and even for a work study job at a college.    Please print your resume and hand it to me at our next class.    I look forward to reading your resume and giving you the constructive criticism to create the resume that will get you the job or internship you want.

To remind you of the format Nan described today, here is my resume as a reference.

Today’s Homework: February 24th, 2017

1.  Please watch this video about BODY LANGUAGE.   The article I gave you to read ties into this short presentation by an expert on BODY LANGUAGE.   It attempts to impress upon you the importance of BODY LANGUAGE.    You can have the best ideas.  You can network tirelessly.   You can try to build the best brand and safeguard it from negative perceptions.   Yet, your best efforts can be unintentionally negated by your body language.  If you’re interested in getting a great internship, a great job, an interview for admission to a college that you believe will maximize your potential, a date with a person you admire, your BODY LANGUAGE may be the key ingredient for achieving this goal.

2. After reading the article I gave you on BODY LANGUAGE, please tell me one BODY LANGUAGE tendency you believe you can improve upon. As always, please express your assessment in a well written statement with perfect spelling, good grammar and punctuation and SHORT SENTENCES sent to my email address no later than Thursday, March 2nd, 2017, 3:45am. Thank you.

3. Here’s another interesting video on BODY LANGUAGE: How to begin a conversation in a networking situation.

Today’s Homework: February 3rd, 2017

1.  You, the Life Skills students, identified and listed a number of important skills a person would need to be hired on Adam Rojek’s Lifespan team.  The skills we identified are often called ‘soft skills‘ or ‘human skills‘.  Many companies focus, as much and sometimes more, on a person’s ‘soft skills‘ than ‘hard skills‘ like computer programming, marketing, accounting, math, pharmacy, etc.  Identify 2 of the skills listed on our classroom white Board that you already possess.  Then, explain why a company should believe you already posses these skills.  This question brings us back to a former class lesson on ‘story telling’.  Your answer will reflect how well you tell your personal story during a job interview and how convincing your story telling abilities are.  Companies will not automatically accept you have these skills you claim you possess.  Companies want examples where you’ve exhibited these skills.  Please send your well expressed, convincing statement with perfect spelling and well constructed, short sentences to my email address by Thursday, 2/9, 3:45am.  Thank you.

Adam 21 -IMG_3366

Here is your list of important skills needed to be successful in a job. Please note, there are NO hard skills listed. Examples of hard skills are computer programming, accounting, graphic design, etc. Instead, many companies are looking for people with the human skills (also called ‘soft skills’) you listed today. Companies believe they can teach ‘hard skills‘ to the people who already have these ‘soft skills‘.

3.  Our next guest for our Life Skills class will be Don Mays, the Director of the Intercultural Center at Roger Williams University.  Get to class early.
