First Quarter Review

Some memorable moments from the 1st quarter of Hope’s Life Skills program.BIFphoto

The first photo is from September’s Business Innovation Factory (BIF) conference at the Trinity Theatre in Providence.  Students were able to listen to the fascinating stories of courageous people  from all over the world on the Trinity stage.  Students were also able to meet and speak with Conference story tellers and attendees during lunch and other break out sessions during the two day conference.  One of the speakers Hope students were able to listen to and meet was fourteen-year-old Camille Beatty.  Camille makes robots with her Dad (Robert) and eleven-year-old sister Genevieve. Last year they built two Mars Rover replicas for the New York Hall of Science.  And, David Moinina Sengeh.  David was born and raised in Sierra Leone and is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the MIT Media Lab.   At Harvard, David co-founded one of Popular Mechanics’ Innovators of the Year 2009 — Lebone Solutions Inc., a company that won $200,000 from the World Bank to produce microbial fuel cells in Africa.  I encourage you to check out the BIF web site for story teller videos from the conference.

Homework 1st quarter review:

Our first quarter is fast approaching its finish line.   For those students looking to catch up, here’s a list of assignments you may complete and send to me electronically for full credit if you so choose.  I hope you do.

    1. Read pages 1 through 28 in your “Brand” text book.  In a well written essay with proper grammar and perfect spelling and punctuation, share your reaction to what you read about ‘personal branding’.   Please send your assignment to me electronically (scronin@twobolt.com).
    2. Dinner with Al Capone!  Complete activity 13 on page 140 in your ‘Brand’ text book.   Read the instructions carefully.  Please send me your essay electronically.  I look forward to reading your response.
    3.  Please watch: Our guests, like Marta today, continually share stories of special people in their networks who have been there for them.  Networks;  the older you get, the more you appreciate their value and importance.  I hope you enjoy this video.  Let me know what you were thinking as you watched.
    4. Fact vs opinion:   There are two assignments on ‘fact’ and ‘opinion’.  The objective of both assignments is to prepare you for determining the difference between ‘fact’ and ‘opinion’ throughout your life.   Everyone encounters massive amounts of information often purporting to be ‘the truth‘.  The challenge we all face is distinguishing what we should accept as ‘truth’ and what is actually another’s perspective or opinion.  Think about what you read in the papers, see on television and hear from people who claim to be experts, authority figures or even friends!   The ability to distinguish between ‘fact’ and ‘opinion’ is critical to lifetime success and personal fulfillment.  See me after class for copies of the assignments if you have misplaced your copies.  I look forward to reading your responses.
    5. Business cards:   You need them for this class.   Business cards are an effective tool for successful networking if you truly want to build a network of successful people you can count on.   If you haven’t filled out our form with the appropriate business card information, ask me for it.  Quickly!!!! if not sooner.

Today’s class: Wendy Lewis – 10-31-14

Wendy Lewis, a talented copywriter, performing artist and martial artist from CVS Health in Woonsocket, came to our ‘Life Skills’ class today, October 31st, 2014, to share her inspirational story of discovery.   Wendy began with her high school experience at the academically rigorous Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, New York City and ending with her present work at CVS writing the commercials we hear on TV and radio and the copy we read on postcard mailings and newspaper.

But it was the conversation in between that seemingly sparked the most intense curiosity.

Homework 10-31-14

1.  Read the profile of Cesar Chavez in your textbook beginning on page 65.   Compose only 3 sentences  describing Mr Chavez all the while making sure someone who has never heard of Mr Chavez will know who he was after reading your 3 sentences.   Your goal is for the reader to appreciate Cesar Chavez’s brand and importance in United States history.    Your sentences must be well written using correct punctuation and spelling.  Avoid composing ‘run-on’ sentences, in other words, too much information in  one sentence.   The purpose of this assignment is to train you to be succinct, that is, using the fewest words possible while making sure the recipient of your message fully understands and appreciates your message.   This is hard.

Takes a long time to master.   This is our start.

2. Watch this video  – It’s a follow up to the story I shared with you last week on the two wrestlers.   This is their story 4 years later.   It’s amazing.   It’s also a story of diversity.  It reinforces Wendy’s comment in class about the benefits of a diverse and positive, encouraging network.   With this kind of network, we all can do great things.   After watching this video, please share your thoughts about the film in a well written essay.

You continue to make me proud.   The questions you ask, your apparent confidence as you spoke in the group, how you greeted Wendy today to make her feel welcome, your great eye contact, smiles and firm handshakes during your greeting and saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ were impressive.  Keep up the good work.   You are building a great brand!

I am building a web site for our class:   hopelifeskills.com.   It’s still under construction but I’d still like to know your opinion.   Please check it out and let me know what you think so far.  There’s more to come.

What do you think about a parent’s night for our class?    Would love to meet your parent or guardian and tell them how great you’re doing in our class.    What do you think about this idea?

Where was Alyssa today?  And Raymond?   They were missed.    Please let them know we need their presence every week.  We all make a difference in the group.
Any volunteers for next week’s host?    We’ll have at least three guests next week.

Didn’t my 2 year old granddaughter from Charlotte do a great job singing that song?   Gotta put that in my playlist.

See you next week!  And always have your business cards to exchange with our guests!
