Today’s Class: March 15, 2019

Today’s guest was Ed Ithier, Sales Program Manager at the Xerox Corporation.

Xerox is an American global corporation that sells print and digital document products and services in more than 160 countries around the world.  Accompanying Ed Ithier was Nick Decesare, the Creative Director at Signature Printing in East Providence, Rhode Island.

Today’s conversation was about basketball, recruiting, taking advantage of networking opportunities

through hard work, pushing out of your comfort for a diverse network of successful people, good time management, and always doing the right thing to create a powerful personal brand.

Today’s Homework: March 8, 2019

This is a college level, challenging assignment.

  1.  After reading pages 1 through 27 in the book entitled “The Truth“, tell me your process for finding consistently accurate, truthful, honest, reliable information.  Email me your answer by Sunday, March 24th.  Perfect spelling, grammar, and capitalization.  And, short sentences too.  Thank you.
  2.   Then, read pages 40 through 53 in “The Truth” textbook.  If you have any questions about anything you read or view on these pages, I encourage you to email me your questions for clarification.  I want to help.
  3.  Next, complete ACTIVITY 3 on page 56 – 57 of “The Truth” textbook. I am asking you to SET UP AN EXCEL SPREADSHEET where you will segment (organize) and rate data in specific categories on 3 hypothetical, separate neighborhoods.   Check the SPREADSHEET sample I created for you on page 57.  Your spreadsheet will enable you to easily analyze the data you have segmented to make a logical decision on which neighborhood you would like to live in.  IF YOU NEED HELP SETTING UP YOUR EXCEL SPREADSHEET, SEE MS. AVARISTA IN ROOM 222.   She told me she welcomes all of you for help setting up an Excel spreadsheet any Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday.  Finally, you are expected to bring your printed Excel Spreadsheet to class on March 29th to show how you used the data you segmented and then analyzed to decide on ‘the best neighborhood to live in‘.  Email me any questions you have about this assignment.

Today’s class: March 8, 2019

Today’s class focused on the every day challenge of finding ‘the truth’,

i.e. honest information we can trust that is accurate to make good decisions for the life we aspire to.   Making good decisions based on accurate, truthful information from credible sources is not easy today based on the amount of prejudice, propaganda, biased tweets, purposeful ‘misinformation’, and ‘fake news‘ we encounter on social media, newspapers, and network and cable news from once trusted sources like news anchors and reporters, community and religious leaders and our elected politicians.  Today’s class attempted to establish a few

 ‘best practices’ for finding honest, accurate, truthful, non-biased, objective, factual information from trustworthy sources to make good decisions.

The classroom setting for today’s conversation.   Students examine a list of ‘statements’ to determine which are ‘fact’, or opinion or ‘just wrong‘!

After students made their individual decisions on the statement list, students work in groups to make collaborative decisions on the list of statements.

A few things to keep in mind when evaluating data to find information which is non-biased, truthful, honest, credible, and accurate.

Today’s Class: March 1, 2019

Today’s guests were Omar Reyes, Assistant Director of Admissions at Rhode Island College, Akintola Fayanjoula, an Admissions Officer at the CCRI Providence office, and Paloma Goico, a student at Rhode Island.  Today’s hosts welcoming Omar, Akintola, and Paloma to Hope High were Jose Quintanilla, Darwin Morales, and Khadiatou Njie. 

The topic of today’s conversation was the college admissions process especially at the Community College of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College.

Today’s Class: February 25, 2019

The Management of today’s class was assumed by Hope High student,  Robert Desilets.

Robert took the lead and the facilitator role for today’s conversation among the Hope Life Skills students and our guests,  Brown University students Alisa Huban and Meghan Mozea.    Alisa, from Austin, Texas, and Meghan, from a small town in western Massachusetts, shared their compelling personal stories from public high school educations to the Ivy League classrooms of Brown University.

Upon Robert’s cue, Maricruz Flores leads our guests and classmate, Lucy Salado, into the Life Skills classroom.

Today’s Homework: February 25, 2019

  1.    “If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough.”    This quote is from an interview of the CEO of a successful international consulting company.  The interview appeared in  the NEW YORK TIMES newspaper.  The CEO is Julie Sweet.  The company is Accenture.  Ms Sweet was given this quote by her husband as she reflected upon the challenges women face in professional life.    At Accenture, Ms Sweet has “made promoting qualified women a top priority, setting aggressive objectives for gender parity across Accenture and pushing to promote more women into executive positions.” Our homework assignment this week asks you to explain what you think this quote implies; i.e. what the author of this quote was trying to get readers to think about.   Please send your well written answer with perfect spelling, short, grammatically correct sentences with perfect capitalization to my email address as soon as possible but no later than Wednesday, February 27, 2019.  Thank you.   BTW – If you recall, we had a Director from Accenture, a woman, who spoke at last December’s FUTURE FORUM 3 at Hope High.

a senior career consultant at Transition Solutions and the former Training and Development Manager at TACO Inc, a multi-million dollar, international company in Cranston, Rhode Island.

  1.  Please imagine you have just finished a job interview at a real company you want to work for and a job position you are really interested in.    We spoke today about the importance of a ‘follow up’ email to the person in the company you interviewed with.  Please compose a ‘follow up’ email to the person you interviewed with.  You can make up a name for this person who interviewed you but reference the company by its real name in your email.   PLEASE REMEMBER THE IMPORTANCE OF  PROPER GRAMMAR, PERFECT SPELLING AND PUNCTUATION IN THIS ‘FOLLOW UP’ CORRESPONDENCE.  Then, send this letter to my email address as soon as possible but no later than Wednesday, February 20.
