AVARISTA IN ROOM 222.   She told me she welcomes all of you for help setting up an Excel spreadsheet any Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday.  Finally, you are expected to bring your printed Excel Spreadsheet to class on March 29th to show how you used the data you segmented and then analyzed to decide on ‘the best neighborhood to live in‘.  Email me any questions you have about this assignment.

Today’s class: March 8, 2019

Today’s class focused on the every day challenge of finding ‘the truth’,

i.e. honest information we can trust that is accurate to make good decisions for the life we aspire to.   Making good decisions based on accurate, truthful information from credible sources is not easy today based on the amount of prejudice, propaganda, biased tweets, purposeful ‘misinformation’, and ‘fake news‘ we encounter on social media, newspapers, and network and cable news from once trusted sources like news anchors and reporters, community and religious leaders and our elected politicians.  Today’s class attempted to establish a few

‘best practices’ for finding honest, accurate, truthful, non-biased, objective, factual information from trustworthy sources to make good decisions.

The classroom setting for today’s conversation.   Students examine a list of ‘statements’ to determine which are ‘fact’, or opinion or ‘just wrong‘!

After students made their individual decisions on the statement list, students work in groups to make collaborative decisions on the list of statements.

A few things to keep in mind when evaluating data to find information which is non-biased, truthful, honest, credible, and accurate.

  1.  Have you heard the expression  – bucket list?   It usually refers to a list of things someone wants to do before the day they “kick the bucket“; “kicking the bucket” is a  euphemism for dying.  Webster’s Dictionary defines this expression as “a list of things a person wants to achieve or experience before reaching a certain age or dying”.   Some people list experiences like “skydiving“, “dining at the Capital Grille“, “learning how to dance the Tango“, or “going to a  Daddy Yankee concert” before kicking the bucket. Hopefully, you get the idea of what this expression means.  This week’s homework WILL NOT BE FOR YOU TO CREATE YOUR BUCKET LIST.   Instead, I’d like you to create a REVERSE BUCKET LIST.  In other words, I am asking you to create a list of experiences you’ve already experienced which have brought you the greatest joy and sense of accomplishment in your life to date.  It could be something you did which you are extremely proud of.  Could be a goal you set or a dream you had which you came to realize or accomplish.   Look at this list in a positive way.  The things on this REVERSE BUCKET LIST have made you very happy, even have made your more confident and increased your self esteem.   YOU CAN LIST AS MANY THINGS ON THIS LIST YOU WISH.  PLEASE PRIORITIZE THE LIST, in other words, what you list as #1 is the thing which has made you feel the best.   Thank you.  BTW – I got this idea from “Breathe Magazine“, page 9; the author was Carol Ann Strange.

1. Watch this video, please.  The rest of this assignment is meant to have you pause, think, reflect, hopefully, arouse your curiosity, stimulate creative thinking, maybe even cause you to collaborate with a smart person you know, in order to reinforce the lessons of our FUTURE FORUM, i.e. technology, specifically artificial intelligence (AI), will continue to have an increasing impact on the jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities in our future. The challenge, hopefully the excitement, for us all will be how we exploit, take advantage of, the capabilities of technology for our exciting career and/or entrepreneurial opportunities.

2.  Please tell me if you could ever see your self working on a farm like the one in this video.   YES or NO.  Then, tell me why.

3.  Please tell me if you could imagine a company you start, or work for, where you would work closely with AI (artificial intelligent) technology: robots, androids, drones, computers, computer programs, on-line portals like Amazon, etc.   YES or NO.   If you answer “no“, please tell me why you would not like to work at a company which uses artificial intelligent technology.   If you answer “yes, please briefly describe the company you would like to start or work for which uses some form of AI.    Please send your WELL WRITTEN email answer to me with PERFECT SPELLING, SHORT SENTENCES, correct PUNCTUATION (periods, commas, etc) and grammar as soon as possible but no later than Wednesday, February 6, 2019.     Please notethis assignment is not about identifying something which is probable.  It’s about identifying something which might be possible!!!!!   I look forward to reading your answer. Thank you.

THE NEXT VIDEO IS NOT PART OF THE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT.  I’VE INCLUDED IT BECAUSE I thought some of you would be interested in watching this conversation between a human, named Carlos, and Sophia, the AI humanoid robot we observed at the FUTURE FORUM . Sophia is teaching Carlos how to meditate. After the ‘greet and meet‘ and the start of Sophia’s instruction, most of the video is silent as you observe Carlos and Sophia meditating. However, don’t miss the end of the video when Sophia brings Carlos out of his meditation. Interesting? Unnerving? Weird? Sad? Was Sophia disappointed Carlos had to leave? Human tendencies? What do you think?  BY THE WAY, the company which created Sophia, Hanson Robotics, has created 9 robot humanoid “siblings” of Sophia named Alice, Albert Einstein Hubo, BINA48, Han, Jules, Professor Einstein, Philip K. Dick Android, Zeno, and Joey Chaos.
